Numero Zero ( Italian: Numero zero) is the seventh novel by Italian author and philosopher Umberto Eco and his final novel released during his lifetime. So it’s about this young woman who, for months, has been mesmerized by the music played by a handsome young Irishman in the subway. I never planned on getting nearly murdered in front of him, let alone actually speaking to him. Calvin was a safe but fun little diversion. Manhattan - particularly musical theater - is a beast for single women. They were definitely one of those couples who you want to root for and hope they make it. Their banter kept me smiling and their unlikely romance made me swoon. The overall mood was definitely light-hearted but, while it did have a bit of a slower start, as the story built, so did the angst and by the time I’d reached the second half, I was flipping pages so fast. This book is genuinely well-written and I highlighted many passages. Truthfully, I’d been in a bit of a book funk for a few days, unable to find a book I really connected with, but as soon as I started reading this, I instantly fell in love with the story and the characters as they unexpectedly tumbled into a pretend marriage of convenience that slowly but surely turned to true love as they began to fall for each other. What a delightfully wonderful book!! A sweet, heart-warming, and romantic story that hit all the right notes and instantly pulled me in as soon as I started reading. “I’ve never met anyone who loved my playing enough to want to put a ring on it.” I think my favourite thing about this book was probably the fact that it was feminist, but in a subtle way (I hope that makes sense). (Also, can we take a moment briefly to appreciate that gorgeous cover?!) Within YA, contemporaries are definitely my preferences, and I heard that there was some feminism in there as well, so I was completely sold on it! It did take me till January to finally read it, but I was not disappointed – it was worth the wait. īack in the summer, when I attended YALC, one of the proofs I was most excited to have picked up from the publishers’ stands around the hall was The Exact Opposite of Okay by Laura Steven. Once again Claire uses copious amounts of drugs, mystical dreams ( hallucinations perhaps?), and information from some strange characters to lead her to the truth. Tracy’s disappearance was discussed at length in the first novel and we get quite a bit of new information through flashbacks in this book. Working this personal case has Claire relying heavily on drugs ( again) and more haunted than ever by another unsolved personal case: the disappearance of her best friend Tracy when they were teenagers. Loved the descriptions of Venice - not that way anymore, but it was, back then. Good to be reminded of how Alex and Milo met, good to see Robin in the early stages of that relationship, good to remember when her workshop was in 'downtown' Venice, when she was just getting started. Starting in, I was captivated from the very first minute. I was betting I wouldn't remember much of the specifics of the plot. But I hadn't read "Bough" for a very long time - decades, probably. Understand, I've read not only all the Alex Delaware books but all the "stand alones" too, "Billy Straight" and the best of them all, "Butcher's Theater". Then I reverted to "When the Bough Breaks" by this much loved author. Occasionally near the end of the book a character's name would come up and I'd realize I had no idea at all who that was. I'd find my mind drifting off, have to backtrack, sometimes more than once. Most weren't all that bad, but neither were any of them all that good. Alex and Milo, I'd bought - and listened to - four or five new books written and narrated by authors and narrators unknown to me. Just prior to this classic adventure with Dr. I'm going to revise my audiobook buying habits. |
